May is Comics Month in Lambeth

Hi,

Nimur sent an email circular around to the members of the reading group the other day and I thought it was so good I decided to transcribe it here(with a little editing).  if you're interested in comics events in London read on.

Dear Graphic People,

Rogan Gosh by Brendan McCarthyJudge Dredd created by Pat Mills and John Wagner

As you probably know (because you've recieved the email circular...) May is going to be a busy month for us.

After bashing our heads together in comics revelation and insight on the autobiographical graphic narrative review, we'll probably head down to the pub to get back to normal with a juice, water, wine or (for those daring ones) beer.

 Swimini Purpose by Brendan McCarthy

It's a tough job but someone has to do it.
And that means us

(you too, don't think I don't see you... )

The May comics month in Lambeth all continues next Saturday, the 16th of May, 2.30pm at Minet Library (52 Knatchbull Rd, London, SE5 9QY‎ - 020 79266073‎)

There we will have our guest extraordinaire, Brendan McCarthy talking about his ultra-diverse career in comics, film, design, painting, television and more!

Now we all know that we don't know where Minet Library is...   but that is not an excuse because it's quite close to Brixton so I'm giving you a map(well, a link - it's hard to stick paper through TFT screens - and believe me, I've tried)

If you are planning on going please reserve a place either by sending me an email or by contacting the Readers and Writers Festival directly on:

Now, I'm sure that you thought it was all end here and that we could all just go home and enjoy a cup of charlie.

But the fact is that instead we're actually going to be again in StreathamLibrary on Saturday the 23rd of May, from 7.30pm onwards... and this is because we're going to have Pat Mills telling us about Charlie's War

Charley's War
by Pat Mills

Now this isn't really about tea (or evensome strange conflict that involves tea bags and coffee fighting over the supremacy over the peaceful milk & sugar, with a backdrop of porcelain jugs) but about comics.

You see Pat Mills has been working in comics for quite a long time. And Charlie's War is a now more than 20 years old strip that he wrote for Battle (if memory serves).

 Illustrated by Joe Colquhoun

So he'll be joining us talking about that but also about Slaine, ABCWarriors, Marshall Law, Judge Dredd, Nemesis The Warlock and so many other strips he's done through the years. This is your chance to come and meet him.

Now I know some of you have been browsing through the readers and writers leaflets that you've dutifully picked up from a Lambeth Library. And you're thinking (quite cosily sitting in front of your screens, I might add) he's gonna say Paul Gravett because I saw his face on the leaflet. But I am not.

(we are full of surprise, like life, apparently)

I am going to say Ilya

(hear inside your head a great  Ahhhh! of surprise and know that it's perfectly normal - you are not hearing voices inside your head. merely a Ahhhh!

(and that's ok because it only happened once)
(or maybe twice)

And you're going to think
Ilya?!

Now where did I hear that name before??

Quite simply he is the editor of The Mammoth Book for Best New Manga vols 1, 2 and 3

The Mammoth Book for
Best New Manga Vol 1
 The Mammoth Book for
Best New Manga Vol 3

Besides being editor for the one of the foremost guides to Manga in the UK he persues a creative career and has produced an adaptation of William Shakespeare's King Lear (on a Native American) setting which is about to be released by Turnaround comics.

So he's going to come and talk to us about that. And quite possibly other things. So you'll have to come and see and hear for yourselves...

oh, and there's going to be some nibbles for these events. And they're free.

 Manga Shakespear:
King Lear

We only ask you to book yourself a space (or more than one, if you're bringing people with you, which is not only perfectly acceptable, but also recommended) on
readersandwriters@lambeth.gov.uk

Feel free to forward this info to friends and family and nice strangers that ou'd like to have a reason to engage in conversation with.

That is all I have to say.

I hope to see you all soon!

Love,

N1mur.

Hi,

Thanks for postng on the topic covering Ilya's appearance in Lambeth as part of the Lambeth Literary month.

Unfortunately the the topic posted was far too full of bugs to be worth while editing. So I deleted it and started from scratch.

The deletion of the posted topic was, in no way, related to your posting there.

Again, thank you for posting.

Regards,

Kruku
